RALEIGH, N.C. Claudia Cooper went 2-for-2 at the plate and Lindsay Campana held UVa to six hits as NC State won its ACC opener, 3-2, over Virginia in the first of two games at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Stadium on Saturday, March 21.
The Pack now stands at 12-9 (1-0 ACC), while the Cavaliers fall to 17-6 (0-1 ACC).
Campana (6-4) struck out 11 in picking up the decision while Karla Wilburn (12-2) got hit with the loss.
Virginia had a shot at pushing a run across in the top of the second with Sarah Tacke reaching third base, but Campana caught Nicole Koren looking with a pitch on the inside corner of the plate.
The Cavaliers eventually struck first in the top of the third when Giannina Cipolloni stroked an RBI single into center, scoring Lauren McCaskey from second.
The Pack had a chance at pushing a run across in the bottom of the third as Landon Warren singled, moved to second on a sac-bunt and took third on a passed ball, but Wilburn induced an inning-ending grounder to second from Allison Presnell.
UVa had a chance to do some more damage in the top of the fourth, but Campana fanned McCaskey with runners on second and third to halt any scoring opportunities.
Cooper knotted the score at 1-all with a solo jack, her second of the year, to dead-center in the bottom of the fourth, but Casey Steffan put the Cavaliers back ahead moments later with a solo home run of her own to left-center in the top of the fifth.
But State would grab the lead for good in the bottom half of the fifth. Stephanie Call ripped a base hit into left and Lauren Peters dropped a sac-bunt, reaching first when the ball was bobbled at third. A Warren grounder to first advanced both runners, and an Alyssa Ishibashi sac-fly to right field tied the score at 2-2. Bridget Desbois then gave State its first lead of the afternoon with an RBI single into right.
NC State and Virginia will begin game two of today’s twin bill shortly.
