Softball Completes Sweep of Michigan State

RALEIGH, N.C. Alyssa Allbritten went 2-for-3 at the plate with a long ball in leading NC State to complete a doubleheader sweep of Michigan State, 3-0, on Tuesday, March 10 at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium. The Pack (10-7) has now won eight of its last nine games.
The Spartans fall to 8-10 with the loss.
Mendy McKenzie (3-3) tossed all seven innings, fanning eight and allowing just three scattered hits. Lauren Kramer (2-3) was handed the loss, while Kelly Confer worked 1.2 innings in relief.
State avoided a colossal disaster in the top of the first as the Spartans had the bases jammed with just one out. But a Gina Mondo fielder’s choice back to the circle allowed McKenzie to toss Kara Weigle out at the dish, and Heidi Purtzer struck out swinging.
Michigan State threatened again in the top of the fourth, putting runners on first and second with no outs, but Purtzer fouled out to third and McKenzie grabbed back-to-back K’s.
Allbritten put the Wolfpack on the scoreboard with a leadoff home run, her second on the season, to start the bottom of the fifth. Eliza Jacobellis later doubled and eventually scored when an Alyssa Ishibashi grounder to short was misplayed.
State increased its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single up the middle courtesy of Bethaney Wells, bringing in Morgan Barbour.
NC State will head to Rock Hill, S.C. this Thursday, March 12, for one game at Winthrop. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m., with live stats available on GoPack.com.
