No. 43 Men's Tennis Upsets No. 14 Michigan

NASHEVILLE, Tenn. - Senior Christian Welte dominated the third set of his singles match to hand No. 14 Michigan its first loss of the season on Saturday, Feb. 7, in Nasheville, Tenn. The 4-3 win for the No. 43 NC State men's tennis team is the first over a top-15 opponent since the Pack defeated No. 11 Texas in the NCAA tournament in 2007. The win improves the Wolfpack to 4-3, and the Wolverines fall to 4-1.
Michigan won two of the doubles matches to earn an early lead for the Wolverines. The No. 8 pair of Mike Srocynski and Jason Jung defeated Welte and redshirt freshman Julian Sullivan, 8-5, at No. 1, and Chris Madden and Drew Daniel took down junior Frideric Prandecki and freshman Rob Lowe, 9-8(8-5), at No. 3. Senior Jay Weinacker and freshman Jaime Pulgar overpowered Andrew Mazlin and George Navas, 8-7(8-6), at No. 2.
The Pack entered the singles matches in full force. Pulgar took down Srocynski, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3, but Navas defeated sophomore David Chermak, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5.
The Pack controlled the next three singles bouts to secure the win. No. 55 Weinacker dominated Jung, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1, to earn his 94th career singles win, one away from the program record. Sullivan took down Madden in the third set, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4, at No. 4. No. 124 Welte clinched the win for the Pack with a third set victory over Mazlin, 6-3, 6-7(7-4), 6-3, at No. 2. Daniel defeated redshirt freshman Eric Turner, 6-2, 7-6(7-4), to close out the match.
The Pack will face No. 28 Vanderbilt tomorrow in Nasheville.
