Blair Leads at Puerto Rico; Pack in Second

Rio Grande, P.R. - Playing in one of the top tournaments of the season, with all 15 teams ranked inside Golfweek's top-70, the NC State men’s golf team got off to a strong start at the 2008 Puerto Rico Classic on Friday. The Wolfpack currently sits in second place just one shot off the lead, after shooting a seven-under (281) in the first round. Two Pack golfers had rounds of under par, and another pair of golfers went even-par and one-over.
The tournament, which Purdue is hosting, is being played at the Rio Mar Country Club River Course in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The River Course is a par-72, 6,902-yard venue.
ACC foe Georgia Tech holds the overall lead at eight-under par (280).
Senior Darren Blair is currently in a tie on top of the field, after shooting a five-under (67) in first round action. Blair shot a 33 on the front-nine followed by a 34 on the back-nine, and is tied with Dylan Fritelli of Texas.
Sophomore Matt Hill is only two strokes off the lead, as he shot a three-under (69) and is tied for fifth place. Hill shot a 34 then a 35 on the day.
Senior Andrew Byrd finished with an even-par (72), while junior Brad Revell is at just one-over (73) after first round action. Sophomore Brandon Detweiler is at four-over (76).
Round 2 will take place tomorrow, with the final round being played on Sunday.
