RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State softball head coach Lisa Navas announced the team’s 2010 schedule on Friday, Oct. 30. The challenging slate features 10 opponents that made the NCAA Tournament a season ago, including two that reached the super regionals.
“We are excited about the upcoming season,” said Navas. “We have a challenging schedule with several solid tournaments to prepare us for conference action. The team is ready to get back out on the field and win some games.”
The Pack will play 10 postseason programs from last year; Auburn, Campbell, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Iowa, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Dakota State and UMass.
Georgia Tech and North Dakota State both made it to the super regionals.
The Pack will play in five challenging tournaments throughout the season, including its own Wolfpack Challenge, March 5-7. Coastal Carolina, Georgetown, Stony Brook and Longwood round out the tournament field.
Aside from its own tournament, the Pack will also play at the FIU Combat Classic in Miami, Fla., the La Quinta Inn & Suites Tournament in Tampa, Fla., the prestigious NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. and the Winthrop / adidas Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Pack’s trip to the NFCA Leadoff Classic – one of the most coveted softball tournaments in the country – marks the program's second appearance at the tournament. All but one of the Pack’s games in Columbus will come against a team that made the NCAA Tournament last season.
In ACC play, NC State will host Virginia Tech, Boston College, Maryland and Georgia Tech. The conference tournament will be hosted by Virginia Tech and held at Tech Softball Park in Blacksburg, Va., May 14-16.
Outside of the ACC, the Pack will host NC Central as well as a double header against East Carolina. The team will also play double-dips on the road at Campbell, Charlotte and UNC Greensboro.
Eleven of the opponents present on the NC State’s schedule have never faced off against the Pack on the diamond, including Florida International, Georgetown, Illinois, Iowa, Longwood, NC Central, North Dakota State, Providence, Southern Illinois, Stony Brook and Wright State.
