Women's Soccer Draws 1-1 At Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A critical game for both NC State and Miami ended up in a 1-1 draw Thursday evening in an Atlantic Coast Conference women’s soccer match at Cobb Stadium.
The two clubs entered the match tied for eighth in the ACC standings. A win by either club would have made things a bit easier in qualifying for the league’s postseason tournament as the top-eight clubs will compete for the ACC title in November at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
In addition, Virginia beat Duke 1-0 tonight in Durham and is now tied with NC State and Miami for eighth in the standings as all three schools have seven points, one behind the seventh-place Blue Devils.
After a scoreless first half, Miami (7-8-2, 2-4-1 ACC) notched the first goal of the evening by Lauren Singer in the 66th minute.
The advantage was short lived as NC State (7-7-2, 2-5-1 ACC) answered right back 27 seconds later when little used sophomore Kristina Argiroff tallied the game’s tying goal.
Argiroff was playing in just her second game of the year after coming off the bench for six minutes at Maryland on Sunday. The goal was the first of her college career after joining the team as a walk-on freshman last season.
Seniors Gia Cipollini and Meredith Parrilla earned assists on the play when Argiroff put her shot into the top-left corner of the goal from 30 yards.
In the first overtime NC State had a pair of shots, including one by senior Chantalle Dugas that Miami keeper Vikki Alonzo hauled in for her only save. Meanwhile, Wolfpacker keeper Kim Kern also made one save to send the game into a second extra session.
In the 98th minute NC State freshman Kara Blosser was whistled for her second yellow of the game, thus a red card was issued and the visitors were down a player for virtually the entire second overtime period.
NC State did not have a shot in the final 10-minute session.
Miami’s Brittney Steinbruch nearly sent everyone home in the 104th minute when she hit the post. The home team put two more shots on net later, but Kern was there to make her seventh and eighth saves of the match to preserve the tie.
NC State continues its swing through the Sunshine State on Sunday at No. 7 Florida State at 1 p.m., in Tallahassee.
