TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Two second-half goals less then three minutes apart gave No. 7 Florida State a 2-0 victory over NC State Sunday afternoon.
Jessica Price scored on a header in the 63rd minute for her 11th goal of the season to make it 1-0 in favor of Florida State (13-2-1, 6-1-1 ACC). She deposited her shot off a cross from teammate Ines Jaurena.
Moments later Price set up the second tally at the 65:29 mark off a throw in that Tiffany McCarty grabbed and slipped a low shot into the net for her team-leading 13th goal of the season. That also added to her ACC-leading point total that now stands at 32 points.
Wolfpack keeper Kim Kern made nine saves, while Erin McNulty had two saves in 81:07 of work, before giving way to Kimmy Diaz for the final 8:53 of the match.
NC State’s best scoring chances came midway through the first half. Sophomore Tanya Cain had the first opportunity at the 23:15 mark, but McNulty was in place to make the save.
A little over a minute later, senior Gia Cipollini marched up from her defensive position to get a shot on net, but once again McNulty was there for the save.
FSU held a 16-3 advantage in shots for the match.
Kern did her best to keep the visiting Pack in the game by coming up with five first-half saves, before the Seminoles finally push through with its two scoring tallies.
NC State (7-8-2, 2-6-1 ACC) steps out of conference Thursday to host Francis Marion at 7 p.m., from Dail Soccer Field. The Pack will then conclude the regular season at home against Duke on Sunday.
