RALEIGH, N.C. Thanks to winning a 2008 PGA Tour event, a pair of former Wolfpack golfers have been invited to participate in this weekend’s Mercedes Benz Championship, the first PGA Tour event of 2009. Carl Pettersson and Marc Turnesa will both be playing in Kapalua, Hawaii, this weekend for a tournament purse of $5.6 million and with a total of 31 participants.
Marc Turnesa will be the first golfer to tee off at 10:45 a.m., while Carl Pettersson’s tee time will be 12:30 p.m. (both times are Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time).
Pettersson qualified thanks to his win at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro in mid-August. Pettersson earned a two-stroke win, finishing at 21-under 259, and the win was Pettersson’s third tour event of his career.
In his rookie season on the tour, Turnesa won the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals Children Open in Las Vegas in mid-October. Turnesa claimed a one-stroke win, thanks in large part to his opening round 62.
PGATOUR.COM also commented on both former Wolfpacker’s chances this coming weekend:
MARC TURNESA. The late-season victory last year in Vegas gave the candidate for 2008 Rookie of the Year confidence he'll take into 2009. Look for him to continue to capitalize on his first trip to Kapalua.
CARL PETTERSSON. The three-time TOUR winner has played this course before, so he won't be bright-eyed at the scenery.

NC State will also be represented by five former Pack golfers in this weekend’s European PGA Tour event, the Joburg Open in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Garth Mulroy, who already has two South African Tour wins, Justin Walters, Steve Lewton, Ross Wellington, and Jan-Are Larsen are all set to compete in the sixth tour event of the season.
