RALEIGH, N.C. Demetress Adams’s final second layup gave South Carolina a stirring 56-55 win over NC State Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum.
Sharnise Beal had given NC State (8-7) the lead with a layup with six seconds left, but after a timeout by the Gamecocks, Adams broke loose from the Wolfpack defense and layed the ball in just before the final horn sounded for the win.
NC State’s Shayla Field led all scorers with 19 points, while Beal added 11.
The back-and-forth affair saw neither team lead by more than three points over the final 6:41. South Carolina led the entire second half until a short jumper by Bonae Holston gave the Pack a 49-48 advantage with 3:04 on the clock.
The lead would change hands five times in the final 68 seconds as the Kay Yow Court crowd was on its feet throughout. The only thing missing from the game itself was Coach Yow. She was not on the bench for a fourth straight game as she battles her low energy level that has left her unable to roam the sidelines over the last couple weeks.
Despite her absence, the Pack has won three games and appeared it would stretch to four straight until the Adams bucket at the end of today’s game.
The first half was a rough and tumble contest that ended with a 21-all tie at the half. Both team’s shot less than 30 percent from the field and struggled to get any fluid offense working at all.
The Gamecocks led 21-16 with 1:32 left until halftime, but a jumper by Nikitta Gartrell (9 points) and a three-pointer from Brittany Strachan squared things up heading to the break.
South Carolina came out strong and went on a 13-2 run to open the second half to take a 34-23 lead. It was still a double figure deficit for the Pack until a 20-9 run capped by Holston’s jumper gave the home team its first lead since midway through the opening half.
Adams led South Carolina (8-5) with 14 points, while C.J. Pace and Brionna Dickerson each tossed in 10.
NC State opens ACC play next Sunday at No. 2 North Carolina at the Dean Smith Center at 1 p.m.
