No. 36 Women's Tennis Defeats Elon, 6-1

RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 36 NC State women's tennis team grabbed its first win of the season over Elon, 6-1, on Friday, Jan. 16, in Raleigh, N.C. at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The Wolfpack swept the doubles matches and won five singles matches. The Pack is now 1-0 on the season, and the Phoenix fall to 0-1.
NC State started off strong, winning all three doubles matches. Junior Berkeley Brock and sophomore Lenka Hojckova, who are ranked No. 2 in the southeast region, defeated Anna Milian and Paige Kensrue, 8-3, at No. 1. Senior Neils Barringer and freshman Diana Mortlock secured the doubles point for the Pack with an 8-3 victory over Elisa Simonetti and Daleen Kloppers at No. 2. Junior Daria Petrovic and freshman Pender Sessoms collected the final doubles win for NC State with an 8-3 decision over Sally Wilkey and Whitney Butcher at No. 3.
The Pack earned the first win of the season with the first three singles matches finishing within minutes of each other. No. 87 Hojckova grabbed the first singles win over Kensrue, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2, and Brock quickly followed with a 6-0, 6-2, win over Milian at No. 1. Mortlock secured the win for the Pack with a 6-1, 6-4, victory over Kloppers at No. 4.
Barringer battled through the first set and came from behind to defeat Simonetti, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 3, and Pender Sessoms beat Wilkey, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5. After falling in the first set, sophomore Jackie Ussery came back to win the second, but fell in the tiebreaker, 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (12-10).
The Pack will next face Old Dominion on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m. in Raleigh.
