RALEIGH, N.C. The NC State women’s soccer team scored three second-half goals to take the 3-2 decision over Stetson on Sunday at NC State Soccer Stadium. In the Wolfpack’s second game of the NC State/Residence Inn North Soccer Tournament, Lindsay Vera scored the game winning goal off a penalty kick in the 73rd minute.
NC State improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1991 when that club opened the year with 14 consecutive wins. Stetson falls to 0-4 in 2008.
Stetson posted the first goal of the game in the first five minutes of the game. Heather Berg took a shot from fifteen yards out into the lower left corner of the goal and sneaked it by NC State’s keeper Rachel Barnette at 4:20.
Not long into the second half, the Pack responded with a goal of its own. Paige Dugal made her second goal of the season off a cross from Kara Baldy to tie the game 1-1 at 48:11. Fifteen minutes later, Baldy blasted a shot from the left flank past Stetson’s goalie off a combo pass from Nadia Aboulhosn and Meredith Parrilla.
The Pack continued its march on the Stetson end of the field and it paid off when Vera was taken down in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. She converted the opportunity into her fifth goal in the last three games.
With just over two minutes remaining in the game, Stetson’s Tessa Gavilsky beat Barnette with a shot in the right corner to cut the lead to one at 3-2. However, the Pack held its lead the final minutes to garner a pair of wins this weekend and remain unbeaten.
NC State had 25 of the game's 30 shots, which forced Stetson's keepers to make a staggering 14 saves. The Pack also held a commanding 8-1 corner kick advantage.
Barnette made one save to improve to 2-0 on the year.
