RALEIGH, N.C. Tanya Cain scored her first two collegiate goals to pace NC State to a 4-0 women’s soccer victory over Campbell Friday night at NC State Soccer Stadium.
The victory improves the Wolfpack’s record to a perfect 6-0, while Campbell falls to 0-3-2. The Pack continues its best start to a season since 1991
The Wolfpack began its scoring barrage off a corner kick from Gia Cipollini in the fourth minute. Her cross found the head of Meredith Parrilla and she defected the ball to Kara Baldy and she deposited the one-touch into the net for her fourth goal of the season.
Play was back and forth for almost the entire first half with neither team really grabbing any serious momentum. Each team only had four shots in the opening 45 minutes.
The Camels best scoring chance came in the 29th minute when Annabelle Gibney fired a shot that went just wide left of the post.
The cushion opened up a little for the Pack in the late goings of the first half when freshman Tanya Cain banged in a cross from Alyson Santilli at 40:41 and it was 2-0 at intermission.
Paige Dugal nearly got into the scoring action in the 54th minute when she rifled a shot off the cross bar in the opening minutes of the second half.
Lindsay Vera gave the Pack some more breathing room when she scored her team-leading sixth marker of the year in the 73rd minute off a tremendous cross from Cipollini.
Cain, who hails from Pinebluff, N.C., rounded out the evening’s festivities when she cleaned up a loose ball after the initial shot by Casey Kilburn was stopped by the Campbell keeper for her second goal of the night at the 80:10 mark.
The Camels did have an apparent goal waved off in the 85th minute when they were whistled for offsides.
Cipollini handed out two assists tonight and now has a team-topping four helpers on the year.
Rachel Barnette had a relatively easy night with no saves to post her first shutout of the season and second of her career.
Boomie Luck made four saves in just over 80 minutes in net for Campbell, while Jamie Panfil had one save in nearly 10 minutes of action.
NC State hits the road for the first time all season at UMBC on Sunday at 1 p.m.
