Hill Blows Away Field at Hawks Invitational

NORTH FALMOUTH, MASS. Sophomore Matt Hill of the NC State men’s golf team won his second career tournament, as he brought home top honors at the 2008 Hawks Invitational that was played the last two days at the Ballymeade Country Club in North Falmouth, Mass.
In Tuesday’s second and final round, Hill set a personal-best with a round of 65, tying for the second-lowest round in school history. For the tournament, Hill shot a 66 and then a 65 to finish at 13-under par (131), nine strokes ahead of the field. Hill led all competitors with a total of 13 birdies, and finished at a tournament-best six-under par on both the par-four holes as well as all the par-five holes.
For the second straight tournament of the fall season, the Wolfpack finished in second place. NC State improved 10 strokes from yesterday’s round, and shot a 283 on Tuesday to finish at 576. NC State led all the teams with a total of 39 birdies in the two rounds.
Baylor won the team championship in the 23-team field, with a final total of 566.
Junior Kent Copeland also finished in the top-10, as he was one-under par (143) for the tournament. In Tuesday’s final round, Copeland finished with a 70 on the par-72 course.
Senior Darren Blair and freshman Mark McMillen were only separated by a stroke. Blair finished with a 151, while McMillen improved eight strokes in Tuesday’s round to shoot an even-par (72) and finished at 152 for the tourment.
The Pack will have one final fall tournament the weekend of October 24-26, when NC State travels to Johnson City, Tenn., to compete in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
