RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - Former NC State women’s golfer Bri Vega has made it through the first round of LPGA Sectional qualifying after shooting even-par (288) over four rounds at Mission Hills Country Club.
Vega (Andover, Mass.) is one of 32 golfers who are one step closer to membership on the 2009 LPGA Tour. She fired scores of 71-69-77-71=288 to tie for 12th among a large field of competitors that included Michelle Wie and former NCAA champion Stacy Lewis.
Vega competed with the Wolfpack from 2002-04 and has the fourth lowest career scoring average with just over a 77-stroke average.
She also won the “Big Break VI: Trump National” on The Golf Channel which gave her exemptions into two LPGA Tour events and all entry fees were waived during the 2007 FUTURES Tour. And an Adams Golf equipment endorsement contract.
The Rancho Mirage qualifier is the first of the LPGA Tour's two sectional qualifying events in 2008. The second LPGA Tour Sectional Qualifying Tournament is Sept. 30-Oct. 3 at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla. The top-30 finishers and ties from the Florida qualifier will join the California sectional qualifiers, current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status and the players who finished sixth through 15th on the final 2008 Duramed FUTURES Tour money list at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.
The LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament takes place at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., from Dec. 3-7.
