BEIJING Former Wolfpack swimmer Dan Velez posted a 1:01.80 to win the third heat and stake a new Puerto Rican record during the 100m-breaststroke prelims at the 2008 Olympics on Saturday, August 8. The time eclipses his old personal best of 1:02.68.
"Dan did an awesome job of harnessing the emotions and excitement of the Olympic games," said head NC State swimming and diving coach Brooks Teal. "When competing on the biggest stage in the world a lot of times athletes improperly channel that energy, but Dan let it become a stimulus to a great performance and recording his best time ever.
"It's definently great to see his hard work pay off," said Teal. "It's fantastic to see him represent Puerto Rico, as well as NC State, in such a positive light."
