RALEIGH, N.C. -- Wolfpack nation will be behind former Wolfpack swimmers Cullen Jones and Dan Velez as the duo compete at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Jones will be competing for Team USA, while Velez takes to the pool for Puerto Rico. Jones and Velez are the 11th and 12th former swimmers in school history to compete in the Olympics.
Jones, who briefly set and held a new American record in the 50-meter prelims at the Olympic swimming trials back in July, will be a member of the 4x100 relay team. A 2006 national champion at NC State, he is just the third African-American swimmer in the history of the U.S. Olympic squad.
Velez spent three years in Raleigh, mainly competing in the breaststroke. He qualified for the Olympics as a member of the Puerto Rican national team by hitting an international qualifying standard in March at a swim meet in Texas. Competition in the 100-breast, Velez’s event, begins Saturday.
