NC State Wrestling's History of Success

Since winning its first ACC team championship in 1976 under legendary head coach Bob Guzzo, the NC State wrestling program has been a perennial power, producing 13 ACC team champions, 99 individual conference champions, 25 All-Americans and four individual national champions.
The Wolfpack has finished in the top 10 nationally three times, including a seventh-place finish in 1993, the school’s best-ever showing at nationals. The Wolfpack has finished in the national top 20 in 12 of the last 27 seasons.
Guzzo took over the reigns of the program in 1975 and immediately put NC State wrestling on the map. Guzzo won ACC championships twice in his first four seasons, then made the program a national power in 1980 when the Wolfpack finished eighth in the team standings at the NCAA Tournament. Freshman Matt Reiss swept through the field at 167 pounds that year to win the national championship, the Wolfpack’s first NCAA champion. From there, Guzzo’s program took off, finishing in the national top 20 11 times in 14 seasons, including four finishes in the national top 10.
The Wolfpack’s rise to prominence was fueled by individual excellence. In 1984, Tab Thacker became the second Wolfpack wrestler in five years to win a national championship, cruising to the heavyweight title, and four years later, Scott Turner produced the ACC’s most impressive individual showing ever at the national tournament. Turner not only won the 1988 national championship at 150 pounds, he swept through the tournament without yielding a single point other than for riding time, earning the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler award, the highest honor a collegiate wrestler can attain. Turner was the first of two wrestlers from the ACC ever to earn that honor.
In 1993, heavyweight Sylvester Terkay put together a perfect season, going 41-0 and winning NC State’s fourth individual national championship. The Pack finished seventh nationally that year, its highest national finish in program history.
Guzzo’s Wolfpack continued to reside at or near the top of the ACC throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, and won three conference championships in his final four years 2001, 2002 and 2004.
Guzzo’s longtime assistant coach, Carter Jordan, took over the program for the 2004-05 season and began the process of steadily building the program back to the heights it enjoyed in the 1980s and early 1990s. Carter’s Wolfpack won the ACC championship in his third season as head coach, 2007, winning the tournament by a whopping 36 points, the largest margin of victory in 13 years. Five Wolfpack wrestlers won conference titles that year, and a school-record-tying eight appeared in the finals.
The Wolfpack failed in its bid to repeat as conference champions in 2008, but made a huge step forward nationally, finishing 25th at the NCAA Championships, the program’s first top-25 finish since the 1993 team finished seventh. In addition, Darrion Caldwell finished fifth at 149 pounds to become the Wolfpack’s first All-American since Mike Miller at 118 pounds in 1996.
