NC State Men's Golf Tradition of Success

NC State began sponsoring men’s golf in 1934, with Ben Venable as the head coach. He was followed by Williams “Doc” Newton, Milton Hobbs, Charlie Tripp, R.B. Armacost and Roy Clogston, who eventually became NC State’s athletics director.
Swimming coach Willis Casey succeeded Clogston as men’s golf coach in 1957, and eventually succeeded him as athletics director as well, in 1968. Al Michaels, the long-time defensive coordinator under football coach Earle Edwards, also served as golf coach from 1958-71.
In 1972, Richard Sykes was hired as NC State’s youngest head coach. Nearly four decades later, Sykes is still leading the Wolfpack, and is now the athletics department’s longest serving employee.
In addition to winning four ACC Coach of the Year awards, Sykes has produced five ACC Tournament individual champions, one ACC Player of the Year, two ACC Rookies of the Year, 28 All-Americas and more than 40 All-ACC selections.
Sykes longed for NC State to open its own golf course, a dream that was realized in the spring of 2009, when the Lonnie Poole Golf Course, a par-71, 7,100-yard Arnold Palmer Design group layout, opened on Centennial Campus. More information about the course is available here.
