RALEIGH, N.C. NC State head swimming coach Brooks Teal announced the captains for the 2008-09 season on Monday, Aug. 25. Stephen Mellor and Mason McGee will lead the charge for the men, while Sarah Merritt and Kathryn Pegg hold the distinction for the women. Mellor, Merritt and Pegg all served in the same capacity a season ago.
In a similar role, Austin Hampton was tabbed as the diving team captain.
“Having great leadership within the team is the first step to success,” said Teal. “I am very excited to have such strong, experienced captains who I know will set high standards for the rest of the team and will set the tone for everything that we do.”
Mellor picked up All-ACC accolades last year in both the 200-back and 200-IM, in addition to competing at the NCAA Championships. McGee was a part of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Neb. this past June, taking to the pool in both the 200 and 400-free. On campus Mellor served as the emcee of last year’s Athletes With Talent benefit fundraising concert raising money for the Frankie Lemmon School and Developmental Center, while the team as a whole adopted and sponsored a local family over the Thanksgiving holiday as well as another local child for Christmas.
Merritt stands as one of the top breaststroke and individual medley participants on the women’s team, while Pegg competes in the freestyle and butterfly events. Both student-athletes are deeply involved with community service, helping the women’s team take first place among all programs at NC State last year in the annual ImPack competition for community service involvement and volunteer efforts. Pegg also stood as the vice president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, helping to organize and orchestra a benefit concert to aid humanitarian efforts in Darfur.
