RALEIGH, N.C. The NC State softball program recently had its annual Welcome Back Picnic, closing the book on the 2007-08 school year and starting anew with 2008-09. Awards were handed out in honor of exceptional performances from the previous season, while the coaches, players, support staff and their families embraced the thought of new goals and challenges during ’08-09.
In all, over 70 families and friends joined together at Dail Plaza at Carter-Finley Stadium.
“We just graduated a great class of seniors,” said head coach Lisa Navas. “Both their personalities and outstanding play will be missed.
“The 2009 team is now taking shape,” said Navas. “It’s been hard to wait for almost two years for these kids to get on campus. Classes started Wednesday and fall practice will be here before we know it.”
Recent graduate Shanna Smith, who has begun a career in athletics as the new game operations graduate assistant this year, was tabbed as the MVP for last season. Alyssa Allbritten was named both rookie of the year and offensive player of the year, while Blair Harkey was chosen as the best defensive player. Heavily lauded hurler Lindsay Campana picked up the mental toughness and extra effort award.
Commemorative softballs were also handed out to both Mackenzie Mangum and Mendy McKenzie. Mangum not only hit her first career home run, but also the first dinger in Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium history with a grand slam against Elon on March 15. Just 11 days later on the NC State campus McKenzie tossed a perfect game against Winthrop, also a stadium first.
