Sharing the Passion this Summer
6/17/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Tennis
It has been almost a year to date since Allison and I graduated from NC State.
One year ago, we both graduated with the combined accomplishments of two bachelor's degrees in communications and eight varsity athlete letters.
From 2003-2007, we were mentored by Hans Olsen; we were friends of Daria Petrovic, Julia Roach, Neils Barringer, Kristsen Bleakly, Kat Grotz, and Berkeley Brock.
Just a few weeks ago, we came back for the women's tennis team's final annual reunion and senior day weekend. It was three days of celeberations and toasts that remembered the past, cherished the present and expressed excitement for the future. But the weekend would not have been so special if it had not been for this one moment.
Coach Olsen and new assistant coach Alison Silverio, invited us onto the court to stand with the current team during one of the most exciting finale's of all spring season.
We were competing against FSU and the total game wins were tied at 3 matches a piece. We had one more match still on the court. As we all lined up on the adjacent court, we were filled with hope, with heart and with strength. We were overcome with the emotion of family as we stood there. We looked at one another and to our past teammates and could feel the same feelings racing through our bodies - this was tennis.
We captured the win that day and with it, it brought back the sense of community and closeness that had been there from the first day we arrived at State. We were blessed to be a part of such an expierence and we wanted others to be able to experience the same. Now, as we enter into the summer months, we, as a team, are given the chance to do just that.
The summer camps begining in July are our chance to share with everyone the strength of the Pack and our knowledge of tennis. NCSU coaches will be accompanied by fellow collegiate tennis players from surrounding colleges who have the same heart and passion to give back through coaching. For 3 weeks, we will teach participants ages 6-18 the strategies, techniques and skills of tennis. We invite every skill level to participate and grow in tennis.
