Wallace, N.C. NC State golfers Brad Revell and Matt Hill moved one step closer to playing in the 2008 U.S. Open after advancing from USGA local qualifying at River Landing on Friday.
Both Revell, 20, and Hill, 19, are from Ontario, Canada, and grew up competing against each other before signing with the Wolfpack, who had seven players in the field.
“I really didn’t have any expectations,” said Revell, who matched Ryan Healy of Wilmington, N.C., for the low round of 68. “I’ve been playing pretty good, but this is sort of a long shot. It was tough today with the wind blowing all day, but I putted really well. You can’t score if you don’t putt well. I made a couple of 20-footers for birdie.”
Hill shot a 69 and was one of three golfers to move on out of a four-man playoff. Those advancing after the one-hole playoff included former PGA Tour player Matt Hendrix and Raleigh Country Club and Carolina Country Club member Cliff Benson III, each heading to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying at any of 12 sites across the nation.

Revell, in the second group off, carded four of his six birdies on the front nine en route to a 4-under-par 68 in 25 mph winds on the 6,921-yard River Course. Revell had bogeys on Nos. 10 and 15, but birdied holes 11 and 13 to close out one of the sophomore’s best career rounds. Revell’s best college tournament to date was a second place April 27 at the Cavalier Classic when he shot rounds of 70-70.
Hill’s 69 came less than three weeks after finishing tied for eighth at the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. Hill’s opening-round 67 led the ACC individual scores after the opening round before he shot 75 and 69.
The freshman was even par through 12, then made three birdies over the final six holes, including a 40-footer on No. 14 and a hit a wedge within 5-feet on the final hole to close out his 3-under-par round.
“You really had to control your ball flight today,” said Hill, who became the first Wolfpack player to win a collegiate tournament since 1995 this season when he captured the Hooties at Bulls Bay in late March.
More than 80 golfers were trying to advance to regional qualifying. The U.S. Open is scheduled for June 9-15 at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Calif.
This was the seventh time in eight years the United States Golf Association has staged local qualifying at the Duplin County course, ranked among the top 25 courses in North Carolina.
