Men's Golf Opens NCAA Regional Play on Thursday

Raleigh, N.C. - The NC  State men’s golf team will look to qualify for the NCAA  Championships this weekend, as the Pack heads to Chattanooga, Tenn., to compete in the 2008 NCAA  East Regional Championships at the Council Fire Golf Club. The top-10 teams this weekend, along with the top two individuals not on those squads, will advance to the NCAA  Championships held May 28-31 at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Indiana.
The Wolfpack enters this weekend's competition as the 12th seed, and will be one of four ACC schools placed in the East Regional (Duke, Virginia Tech and Virginia).
This weekend's course is a Par 71 with a 6,961-yard layout. The teams will play a total of 54 rounds over the weekend, with a round of 18 holes each day. The field consists of 27 seeded teams, along with six individuals, to make the tournament a 141-man field.
NC  State will be sending: juniors Darren Blair and Andrew Byrd, sophomores Kent Copeland and Brad Revell and freshman Matt Hill as its group of five.
All-ACC selection Hill leads the Wolfpack this season with a stroke average of 71.5. This season, he brought home the individual title at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate, winning the tournament by two strokes.
The Wolfpack is currently ranked No. 32 in the latest Golfweek performance index, while Golfstat has the Pack No. 35. NC State finished seventh at the ACC Championships, with Hill placing eighth overall.
The NC State men’s golf program will be making its 16th trip, and the ninth in the last 11 years, to the NCAA Regionals, all under the direction of coach Richard Sykes. The Pack has been successful its last five trips to the NCAA Regionals, all top-10 finishes. Last time the Pack went was in 2006, and the Wolfpack came back from the West Regional in fifth place. In 2004 NC State tied for 10th, finished third in 2003, fifth in 2002 and second in 2001.
The Wolfpack will tee off in the first round on Thursday at 12:35 p.m. on the 10th hole, and at 8:05 a.m. on Friday from Hole No. 1. The times and pairings for Saturday’s final round will be set after completion of the first two rounds.
