CHARLOTTE, N.C. Alyssa Allbritten belted a solo shot to dead center in the top of the ninth to give NC State a doubleheader sweep of Charlotte, 2-1, on Tuesday, April 15. Allbritten went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored at the plate, leading the Wolfpack (27-20) over the 49ers (25-22).
Mendy McKenzie tossed 4.1 hitless innings to begin the game, but it was Lindsay Campana (16-13) that picked up the decision in relief. Campana tossed the final two frames without allowing a single base runner for the 49ers.
Emily Jeffery (13-9) suffered the defeat.
Allbritten put the Pack ahead with her 17th double of the season in the top of the third. Ashleigh Davis walked, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Allbritten’s liner into right-center.
Serena Smith walked to start the bottom of the fourth, and later moved to second on a passed ball. But Cee Brooks left her stranded by popping up to second.
Kendra McCall picked up Charlotte’s first hit, a blooper into shallow left, with one on in the bottom of the fifth. Sarah Malene then drew a walk to load the bases with one out, and Whitney Williams followed with a game-tying single into right.
McKenzie escaped further damage when Smith lined out to the circle and Williams got doubled up at first.
The 49ers loaded the bases on walks in the bottom of the seventh, but Shanna Smith made an incredible diving stab to secure a soft West liner up the middle to force extra innings.
Campana took over the pitching duties for State in the bottom of the eighth, sitting Charlotte down in order.
Allbritten dealt the final blow to start the ninth with a solo blast to center.
This weekend the gloves will come off as the Pack resumes its rivalry with arch nemesis North Carolina for a three-game conference series in Chapel Hill. The two teams will meet at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, before playing the closer at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 20. Live stats will be available for all three games on GoPack.com, while ACC Select will provide live video streaming of the entire series.
