RALEIGH, N.C. NC State will step outside of ACC play for its next-to-last non-conference doubleheader of the season tomorrow, Tuesday, April 15, with two games at Charlotte. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m., with game two to follow around 6 p.m. Live stats for both meetings will be available via GoPack.com.
NC State hits the road at 25-20 (8-7 ACC). Shanna Smith, who was named ACC Co-Player of the Week earlier today, leads the team in batting average (.353) hits (49), home runs (11), total bases (93), walks (30) on-base percentage (.468) and stolen bases (22). Her totals in home runs, total bases and on-base percentage also lead the conference.
Lindsay Campana (14-13, 2.20 ERA) and Mendy McKenzie (11-7, 1 save, 2.63 ERA) have remained steady for the Pack’s pitching staff. Campana has pitched 180.1 frames, with McKenzie hurling 133.2. Campana has won five or her last six decisions, while McKenzie has taken four of seven.
Charlotte also stands at 25-20, having won seven of its last eight contests. The 49ers lone loss during that stretch came at the hands of North Carolina in the first game of a doubleheader that the two teams split. Serena Smith has been consistent at the plate, leading Charlotte with a .345 batting average and 50 hits. Jaime West’s 32 RBIs and four home runs are both team-highs, as is Cee Brooks’ 11 doubles. Sarah Malene has made good on 19 of 26 stolen base attempts.
Katy Hackett (11-10, 2.25 ERA) and Emily Jeffery (13-8, 2.62) stand as the one-two punch for the 49ers in the circle. Hackett has tossed 152.1 innings, while Jeffery has worked 122.2. Gina Allen (1-2, 6.52 ERA, 29.0 innings pitched) has been used sporadically.
State leads the all-time series, 4-2. The two programs met last year in Raleigh with the Pack taking both games, including a shortened 8-0 five-inning decision in the second contest.
This weekend the gloves will come off as the Pack resumes its rivalry with arch nemesis North Carolina for a three-game conference series in Chapel Hill. The two teams will meet at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, before playing the closer at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 20. Live stats will be available for all three games on GoPack.com, while Saturday’s doubleheader will be broadcast live via ACCSelect.
