ANANDAW, S.C. The NC State men’s golf team downed 11 ranked teams, including seven ranked in the top-20, in claiming first place honors at the Hootie @ Bulls Bay Invitational on Tuesday afternoon. The Pack claimed its first spring tournament title since 1997, as NC State finished 12 strokes ahead of the pace at 14-under par (288-279-271=838) for the tournament.
For the second straight day, NC State turned in the top team round of the tournament. In the second round on Monday, the Pack was the only school under par (five-under), and improved upon that score in today’s final round by shooting a 13-under par (271). The Pack had three golfers finish in the top-10 for the tournament, and four in the top-20 overall.
In Tuesday’s final round, all five Pack golfers were under-par for the day. The Pack had a total of 21 birdies, and of the 90 combined holes, NC State only recorded a score of above par on six of them.
Freshman Matt Hill claimed a two-stroke win for the individual title, as he finished at nine-under (204) for the tournament. Hill’s tournament total is the third lowest in school history, and he is the first freshman golfer at NC State to claim a tournament title since Brian Tutich did so at the Barton Invitational in 1996.
Hill used six birdies in the final round to finish with a five-under (66. After shooting an even-par (71) in the first round, Hill shot rounds of four-under (67) and a five-under (66) in the final two rounds for the individual championship.
Darren Blair finished fifth for the tournament, at three-under (210). Blair matched Hill with six birdies on the day, including four on the final five holes, as Blair shot a four-under (67) in the final round,
Andrew Byrd also finished in the top-10, as he was seventh at two-under (211). Byrd used four birdies on Tuesday to gain his second under-par round of the tournament (one-under, 70).
Kent Copeland shot a three-under (68) in Tuesday’s final round, thanks in large part to just one hole over par and four birdies. Copeland finished in 14th place for the tournament, shooting an even-par (213).
Brad Revell had one birdie and the other 17 holes at par on Tuesday, to finish the round at one-under (70).
The Pack will return to action April 4-6, competing in the Administaff Invitational at Augusta, Ga.
