RALEIGH, N.C. Boston College took the second game of a doubleheader, 2-1, over NC State on Saturday, March 15 at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium. The loss sends the Pack to 15-13 (1-1 ACC), while the Eagles climb to 10-14 (1-1 ACC).
Mendy McKenzie (7-3) took the loss, giving up two earned runs, three walks and two hits. She picked up five strikeouts. Taylor Peyton (6-5) got the win for the BC, allowing just four hits and one run.
The Eagles had runners on second and third with one out in the top of the fifth, but didn’t score. Nicole Troncoso tried to score on a passed ball, but Alyssa Allbritten got the ball to McKenzie at the plate in time to tag her out. McKenzie then dismissed Gemma Ypparila to keep the Eagles off of the scoreboard.
The Pack had a tailor made scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fifth, but couldn’t capitalize. Kristine Bechtholdt singled up the middle, and Krystal Hawkins ran in her place. Alyssa Ishibashi then dropped a perfect bunt towards third, taking first and pushing Hawkins to second. Eliza Jacobellis came in to run for Ishibashi, and both base runners slid up a bag on a wild pitch from Peyton.
But Lisa Nentwig went down swinging, Blair Harkey lined out to third, and State’s chance was over as soon as it had begun.
BC took a late 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth. Amanda Booth drew a leadoff walk, and Peyton helped her own cause by smoking an RBI double over Bechtholdt’s head in left.
The Pack made things interesting again in the bottom of the sixth. Lauren Peters reached and advanced to second on a throwing error by Delagrammatica at short. Peters later moved ahead to third on a passed ball, but Peyton caught Lacey Holm swinging.
Carly McNary plated another run for BC in the top of the seventh with an RBI triple to right.
Bechtholdt gave the Pack its lone run of the game with a solo shot to left-center, her second of the year, in the bottom of the seventh.
State and BC will wrap up its series tomorrow, Sunday, March 16, with a 1 p.m. showdown at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium.
