NC State's match with Notre Dame came down to the wire, and in the end it came down to losing the doubles point and a tense three-set match at No. 6 singles for the second straight contest. The No. 30 Irish (10-4) used an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles to take the early lead and hold on against a furious No. 49 Wolfpack (6-6) rally in singles.
The Fighting Irish are the defending Blue Gray Tennis Classic champions and have won it three times overall in its program history.
The match got started with a tightly contested doubles point that saw the Wolfpack fall for just the fourth time in 12 matches this season. Nick Cavaday and Jay Weinacker opened up play with a win at No. 1 singles, 8-4, to improve to 7-2 overall in the spring. The Wolfpack duo is ranked No. 6 nationally.
Christian Welte and James McGee lost at No. 2 singles to even up the doubles point, and David Rozek and Rob Lowe lost at No. 3, 8-6, to give the Irish the early advantage, 1-0.
In singles, NC State would secure wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Cavaday won at No. 3 in a trio of sets, 7-5, 6-7, 6-0, for his seventh win of the season.
Welte won in three-sets at No. 4, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, and he improved to 9-3 in singles this spring.
At No. 5, Derek Stephens came from a set down to give NC State it's third point, rallying for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win.
McGee lost at No. 1 singles to the nation's No. 17-ranked player, Brett Helgeson, 6-4, 7-6.
Weinacker lost at No. 2 in a three-set match, 6-4, 0-6, 6-1, to knot the match at 3-3.
Flash back to last Wednesday as NC State found itself in a similar situation at No. 20 Wake Forest. The Wolfpack lost the doubles point and won three of the first five singles matches against the Deacons with the match being decided at No. 6 with freshman David Chermak falling in a three-setter.
The talented Chermak, who had his redshirt removed four matches ago to bolster the No. 6 singles spot, had the team point come down to his court. With both teams sitting and watching, Chermak and Tyler Davis battled to a three-set finale, with Chermak winning just three less games in the match, 6-4m 6-7, 7-5.
The Wolfpack will face the loser of No. 8 Tulsa and No. 60 William & Mary in the consolation bracket on Friday in Montgomery, Ala.
