RALEIGH, N.C. - Wolfpack softball returns to the diamond this weekend at the College of Charleston’s Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C., Feb. 22-24. The Pack will take on College of Charleston, Kennesaw State, Liberty, Tennessee Tech and Towson.
State will get things going on Friday night with an 8 p.m. showdown with Kennesaw State. On Saturday the red and white will face Tennessee Tech at 12 p.m., later taking on host College of Charleston at 4 p.m. Play will draw to a close on Sunday, as the Pack squares off against Towson at 10 a.m., and Liberty at 12 p.m.
Kennesaw State, a member of the Atlantic Sun, enters the weekend with an 8-2 record. The Owls, which won their first seven games of the year, are led at the plate by Lyndsay McCurry’s .417 batting clip. Brittany Matthews posts a 5-1 record in the circle and carries a 1.15 ERA.
Tennessee Tech, out of the Ohio Valley conference, stands at 1-8 and is in the midst of a five-game skid. The Golden Eagles boast three players with batting averages over .300, including Stephanie Fischer and her .357 mark. Sarah Street (0-6) has tossed a 1.85 ERA despite not picking up any wins.
At 2-11 on the year, College of Charleston, out of the Southern Conference, has lost four of its last five games. With 12 hits and a .286 batting average Tiffany Harmon leads the Cougars offense, while Terri Mesko (0-6) has tossed 46 innings for the pitching staff.
Towson, out of the Colonial Athletic Association, will open its season in Charleston. The Tigers return 11 letterwinners from its 2007 squad that went 25-31.
Liberty, a member of the Big South, will also begin the year in Charleston. Last season the Flames went 36-26. Liberty recently picked up a projected fourth-place finish in the annual Big South Preseason Poll.
State is just a combined 2-0 all-time versus teams in the College of Charleston’s Cougar Classic, having downed both Liberty and Tennessee Tech in its only meeting with those programs. This weekend will mark the first meeting between the Wolfpack and College of Charleston, Kennesaw State and Towson.
