BOCA RATON, Fla. Linsday Campana (2-3) picked up her second shutout and allowed just three hits while fanning four batters as NC State topped Long Island, 1-0, at the FAU “Strike-Out” Cancer Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 16. Alyssa Allbritten scored the only run of the game on a passed ball with two outs in the top of the seventh.
State moves to 4-4 on the year with the victory, while Long Island (2-1) takes its first loss.
Jenny Giles (1-1) kept the Pack hitless through 5.2 innings until Shanna Smith placed a two-out single, State’s lone hit of the contest, up the middle in the top of the sixth. Giles then struck out Lauren Peters to thwart the development of any scoring opportunities.
LIU threatened in the bottom of the sixth but failed to score. Ayzsha Ervin led off with an infield single, but Mariesha Marker followed with a fielder’s choice back to the circle and Campana threw Ervin out at second. Campana then got back-to-back fly balls from Vanessa Mejia and Celina Castillo, ending the inning and keeping the Blackbirds off of the scoreboard.
State got the one run it needed with a lot of manufacturing and a little luck in the top of the seventh. Allbritten drew a lead off walk and moved to second on an Allison Presnell sac-bunt. Claudia Cooper then sent Allbritten to third with a groundout to second. With Lacey Holm at the plate, a Giles pitch went through the legs of catcher Jessie DePippo, allowing Allbritten to score on the passed ball.
The Blackbirds did make the Pack hold its breath in the bottom half of the seventh. DePippo walked to start off, and Brittany Murphy came on to run in her spot. Raylene Asman then moved Murphy to second with a sac-bunt, before Chelsea Martinson sent Murphy to third with a groundout.
But with runners on the corners and two outs, Campana forced Brynn Lewis to groundout to short, shutting the door on the game.
