Swimming & Diving Falls at North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. The NC State men and women’s swimming and diving teams both lost at North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Friday, Feb. 1. The men (5-3, 2-3 ACC) fell by a score of 167-131, while the women (4-3, 3-1 ACC) were defeated 172-116.
On the women’s end, Maresa Like-Mathews finished third in the 1650-free with a 17:29.05, and Anna Linkenauger took the same spot in the 100-breast on a 1:06.84. Kayla Ricedorf placed third in the 200-butter (2:08.31) and Ashley Ritcher and Patrice Dason tied for third in the 50-free (24.26). Ritcher later placed third again in the 100-free with a 52.78.
Jen Kopenitz fell just short of first place in the 200-back (2:03.64), and Jessica Ward won the 200-breast on a 2:20.34, while Sarah Merritt placed third at 2:25.04. Dason got another victory for the red and white with a 56.10 in the 100-butter, and Kopenitz (4:29.14), Linkenauger (4:30.87), and Merritt (4:35.59) took one-two-three in the 400-IM.
The Wolfpack relays swept first and second in the 200-freestyle relay, with Ritcher, Dason, Erica Smith and Lucy Lindsey swimming a 1:38.34 for first-place.
Chelsea Ale (255.15) and Kristin Davies (254.78) took first and second in the 1-meter, and Ale (268.13) and Davies (266.03) then wound up third and fourth in the 3-meter dive.
Andrew Lester hit an NCAA B’ cut in the 1650-free with a second-place time of 15:32.23, and Steven Mellor hit another B’ standard while winning the 200-back on a (1:46.63). Mason McGee took second in the 200-free with a 1:40.37 and Mellor won again in the 100-back on a 49.83. Dan Forsythe (57.38) and Jack Roney (58.14) took second and third respectively in the 100-breast, while Kevin Woodhull-Smith (1:52.87) and Mike Seiferth (1:53.33) did the same in the 200-butter.
Dan Glauber placed second in the 50-free with a 21.32 time, and McGee (46.94) and Glauber (47.01) took second and third in the 100-free. Lester notched another decision with a 4:34.99 time in the 500-free, and Seiferth’s 51.96 was enough for second in the 100-butter. Mellor later took third in the 400-IM thanks to a 4:00.96.
Austin Hampton (344.10) and Scott Blackwelder (292.13) took second and third in the 1-meter dive, then did the same in the 3-meter (Hampton 318.15, Blackwelder 297.38).
The Wolfpack relay of Travis Martinez, Taylor Goodwin, Allen Lee and Glauber finished the evening by winning the 200-freestyle relay with a 1:25.46.
NC State will return to action at the ACC Championships on Wednesday, Feb. 20 in Atlanta, Ga.
