RALEIGH, N.C. NC State head coach Brooks Teal, along with head diving coach Jenny Keim Johansen, announced the signing of four student-athletes to the Wolfpack men’s swimming and diving program on Tuesday, Dec. 9. Brandon Kingston, Hudson Rains, Kevin Vallario and Matt Voell will all join the roster in time for the 2009-10 season.
“We are extremely excited about this recruiting class,” said Teal. “This group of young men brings in a lot of talent and they can all compete at the height of the ACC as well as nationally. That’s what we need to keep our program climbing upward.”
Kingston, Vallario and Voell are all accomplished swimmers, while the standout Rains will dive for the red and white.
Kingston, a native of Holland Landing, Ontario, Canada, is a student at Newmarket High. A Canadian nationals qualifier, he brings an incredible work ethic to the program and will specialize in distance events. Recruited by Pittsburgh, Missouri, Buffalo and Oakland, Kingston also competes for head coach Allan Swanson’s Newmarket Stingrays club program. His career bests include a 16:00.97 in the 1500 freestyle (long course meters), 3:54.50 in the 400 freestyle (short course meters) and a 1:55.41 in the 200 freestyle (long course meters).
Rains, out of Houston, Texas, is enrolled at Cypress-Fairbanks Senior High. He also competes with the Cougar Diving club program under head coach Todd Mulzet. One of the top recruited divers this past year, Hudson only began competing in diving as a freshman in high school after a lengthy gymnastics career. He took first in the 3-meter dive (467.80) and second in the platform dive (375.05) at the U.S.A. Diving Group Age Nationals this past year after earlier qualifying for the junior national championships in the 1-meter dive.
Coming out of Olney, Md., Vallario attends Our Lady of Good Counsel High and competes under head coach Dan Haines for the Flying Gull Aquatic club outfit. With an emphasis on sprint freestyle events, he brings a wealth of experience and strength to a young and up-and-coming sprint corps in Raleigh. Vallario has garnered All-America honors in multiple events and is a junior national qualifier. He selected NC State over Clemson, Louisville, Maryland and Oakland. Vallario’s top times include a 21.04 in the 50 freestyle, 45.65 in the 100 freestyle and a 1:42.48 in the 200 freestyle.
Voell comes to Raleigh via Greenwood Village, Colo. A student at Cherry Creek High, he also competes for the ACES club program under coaches Eric Craven and Tom Byorick. A junior national qualifier and state finalist, Voell should make an immediate impact in the sprint freestyle and butterfly events, as well as the medley relays. He accepted an offer to attend NC State over opportunities at Georgia Tech and Miami (Ohio). Voell’s top times include a 50.25 in the 100 butterfly, 21.32 in the 50 freestyle and a 47.38 in the 100 freestyle.
NC State men’s and women’s swimming and diving will return to team competition on Jan. 9 at home against Michigan State at Casey Natatorium.
