RALEIGH, N.C. NC State head softball coach Lisa Navas announced the signing of three student-athletes to Wolfpack softball program during the early signing period on Thursday, Dec. 4. Breanna Andrews, Caitlin Dent and Linzy Rother will join the Pack in time for the 2010 season.
“Although it is the smallest class that we’ve signed to this point, we were able to address some needs and shore up our program for the future,” said Navas. “All three newcomers will have the chance to make a positive impact for the program.”
Andrews will serve as a shortstop for State, while Dent will function as an infielder and utility player. Rother has the potential to play first base and pitch.
Hailing from nearby Greenville, N.C., Andrews attends D.H. Conley High School. A three-year letterwinner for head coach Wayne Deans, Andrews hit .416 a year ago en route to helping her squad to a conference championship as well as second place finish in the state 3A championships. A two-time all-state and all-conference selection, Andrews was named district player of the year a season ago, as well as Pitt County “Hitter of the Year” by The Daily Reflector. Active on the club circuit, Andrews and the Carolina Diamonds won the WFC World Series in 2008. Both of her parents attended NC State.
“Bre is a player that has come up through our camps,” said Navas. “I was excited to have her then and work with her in our camp system, and I am even more excited about working with her in the future.”
Dent, a native of Boynton Beach, Fla., is a student at Park Vista High School. A four-year letterwinner under head coach Pam Romero, Dent helped led her team to three district championships and a 71-11-1 record through her first three seasons. A four-time first team all-conference and three-time first team all-county player, Dent is a career .373 batter with 25 extra base hits. She has struck out in just 14 of 260 plate appearances, and is also a heavily lauded setter for her high school volleyball team. Dent is the of daughter two-time World Series champion and 1978 World Series MVP Bucky Dent. Her twin brother, Cody, will play baseball at Florida.
“Caitlin will help us in so many ways,” said Navas. “ Her versatility makes her an exceptional addition.”
A student at Long Beach Wilson High School, Rother resides in Long Beach, Calif. Last season she started 12 games in the circle, tossing eight complete affairs. The three-year letterwinner also belted six extra base hits at the plate on her way to being named second-team all league. In club ball she currently plays with the So. Cal Crunch and has been a part of three ASA national championship teams. Her father, Tim Rother, played football at Nebraska and was a defensive tackle for the Los Angeles Raiders.
“Linzy is just a pure hitter,” said Navas. “I am looking forward to her breaking a few records.”
The NC State softball team will begin the 2009 season at the Crowne Plaza Classic in Houston, Texas this coming Feb. 13-15.
