RALEIGH, N.C Several student-athletes on both the Wolfpack men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be in action this weekend at two different events on the road. Nine swimmers across both teams will head to the Husky Invitational, while one diver will compete at the Ohio State Invitational.
The Husky Invitational, located in Federal Way, Wash., will run Dec. 4-6, with Jen Kopenitz, Anna Linkenauger and Erica Smith attending on behalf of the State women.
When the Pack last competed at the Maryland Invitational (Nov. 20-22) Smith set two new individual school records, hitting a 55.56 in the 100 backstroke on two occasions, as well as nailing a 2:00.87 in the 200 backstroke. Smith’s 100 backstroke time clocks in as fifth best in the ACC this year, while her 200-backstroke time stands eighth. Linkenauger’s 4:25.43 in the 400 IM is seventh best among all conference competitors, while Kopenitz’s 2:01.44 is 11th in the 200 backstroke.
Dan Forsythe, Andrew Lester, Mason McGee, Stephen Mellor, Mike Seiferth and Kevin Woodull-Smith will represent the State men at the Husky Invitational, having combined for 13 top-20 times in the conference and eight top-5 times.
McGee owns the top times in the ACC in both the 200 freestyle (1:37.13) and 500 freestyle (4:23.74), as well as the third best mark in the 400 (3:58.26). Woodhull-Smith holds the second best mark in the 200 IM (1:48.97) and fourth best in the 200 back (1:48.42), while Forsythe stands fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:02.24) and seventh in the 100 breaststroke (56.50). Mellor has four times in the top-six, including fifth in both the 100 back (49.41) and 200 butterfly (1:49.63) and sixth in both the 200 back (1:48.52) and 200 IM (1:51.86). Lester’s 9:25.91 in the 1000 freestyle is 10th best in the league, while Seiferth’s 200-butterfly time of 1:52.50 is 20th.
Kristin Davies of the women’s diving squad will be the lone Wolfpack representative at the Ohio State Invitational in Columbus, Dec. 5-7. Davies, who has already qualified for the NCAA diving zones in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, owns the eighth best 3-meter score in the conference this season with a 306.15. That score, established at Virginia Tech’s War Memorial Pool, set a new pool record for the Hokies and stands as a personal best for Davies.
NC State men’s and women’s swimming and diving will return to team competition on Jan. 9 at home against Michigan State at Casey Natatorium.
