MIAMI, Fla. Nothing went right for NC State Friday night in a disappointing 58-42 loss to Florida International Friday night at US Century Bank Arena.
NC State (4-2) fell behind early and was never able to regain its footing the rest of the game. The Wolfpack’s deficit grew to double figures in the late stages of the first half and trailed 30-18 at intermission.
The Pack clawed back in the second half to get within five, 43-38, on a put back layup by Inga Muciniece with eight minutes left giving the team hope of making a comeback.
But NC State went scoreless for nearly five minutes, which allowed the Golden Panthers to take a 56-40 lead with just over a minute to play.
Shayla Fields led all scorers with 23 points, but was the only Wolfpacker to score more than four points as the team shot just 28.1 percent in the game.
Adding insult to injury, Fields, a career 77-percent free throw shooter, missed six of nine attempts from the stripe as the ACC’s leading free throw shooting team went just 6-for-13 for the game.
Fanni Hutlassa and Monika Bosilj each scored 14 to lead FIU (1-4) to its first win of the season.
NC State plays its first ranked team of the season tomorrow against No. 15/16 Auburn (5-0) at 6 p.m. in the second day of the FIU Thanksgiving Classic.
