RALEIGH, N.C. Head coach Richard Sykes of the NC State men’s golf team continues to use his ties to Ontario and bring the top golfers from that region to NC State. Sykes recently signed 2008 Canadian Junior National Champion Mitchell Sutton (London, Ontario) to a National Letter of Intent, as Sutton will join the Wolfpack for the 2009-10 season.
“We are extremely excited about having Mitchell join our program next season,” said Sykes. “Based on his previous results on the junior circuit, he should have a major impact on our program.”
Sutton, from Thames Valley High School, won the 2008 Canadian Junior Boys Championship by three strokes back in early August. He finished the tournament shooting a 280, including a final round 3-under-par-69. He started the final round two strokes back, but managed a solid 3-under parr 33 on the back-nine.
Sutton went on to finish 23rd at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championships in August. Sutton is also the reigning Ontario Junior Champion, believed to be the first time a golfer has held both titles at the same time.
Sykes has mined Ontario for talent in the past, as two current NC State men’s golfers have come from the area. Sophomore Matt Hill is currently the No. 1 rated golfer in the entire NCAA after finishing the fall season with a 69.43 stroke average, while junior Brad Revell has been in the Pack’s lineup in eight of the last nine tournaments dating back to last season.
