NC State in Season Openers
The Wolfpack is 30-4 all-time in regular season openers, 29-4 under head coach Kay Yow. The Pack's last season-opening loss came against No. 25 UC Santa Barbara, 71-66, on Nov. 22, 2002 at Reynolds Coliseum. The Pack has not lost an opening game to a non-ranked team since a 68-58 setback to Memphis on Nov. 22, 1985.
NC State in Home Openers
The Wolfpack is also 30-4 in home openers, which includes an 19-1 mark when the Pack plays its first game of the year at home, 18-1 under coach Yow. The only blemish was a loss to No. 25 UC Santa Barbara, 71-66, on Nov. 22, 2002. NC State has won its last five home openers by an average of 31 points, inlcuding 30 point victories each of the last three seasons.
Shayla Fields Forever
Expect senior Shayla Fields to play a lot once against this season as the court general for Coach Yow and the Wolfpack. Here is a breakdown of what she did last year.
Led the ACC with 36.00 minutes per game.
Played 96.8 percent (542 of 560) of the total minutes in ACC contests
Had stretches of 245 and 202 consecutive minutes played
Played in 14 full contests this season
Pursuing 1,000 Points
Shayla Fields is 187 points shy of 1,000 for her career. Not bad considering she ony scored three points during her freshman season. She has tallied 810 points over the last two seasons (11.7 points per game).
Beyond the Arc
Shayla Fields is one three-pointer shy of tying for seventh all-time in program history. She is already one of only eight to make over 100 in a career.
Starting Five Stalwarts
NC State's five starters are likely to play a lot of minutes this season. In the exhibition game the starters played 177 of the 200 total minutes, which included Shayla Fields (40), Nikitta Gartrell (39), Brittany Strachan (37), Tia Bell (33) and Lucy Ellison (28).
More Milestones for Coach Yow
Coach Yow posted is 10 games shy of taking the court for the 1,000th time as the head mentor of the Wolfpack women. Only Tennessee's Pat Summitt and former Texas' coach Jody Condradt have coached more games at one school than Yow at the Division I level. Coach Yow is also 21 wins away from 750 for her career, which only Summitt, Condradt, Vivian Stringer (Rutgers) and UNC's Sylvia Hatchell have accomplished.
Chow 4 Yow
The ACC head women’s basketball coaches have banded together in support of NC State head women’s basketball coach Kay Yow to develop the “Chow 4Yow - Dinner with the Coach” initiative.
The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund is the sole charity beneficiary of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). With 100 percent of the league’s women’s basketball coaches and administrative staffs supporting the initiative, each school will conduct a “Dinner with the Coach” fundraiser this upcoming 2008-09 season at his or her institution. All proceeds will be pooled together as a single donation to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
Regarding NC State, the dinner will be at Yow’s home in Cary on Friday, Dec. 12. The auction winner and three guests will be served a four-course meal, and a large helping of basketball history. The winner will also receive four courtside tickets for the NC State men’s game the next day against Winston-Salem State and four courtside seats for the Sunday, Dec. 14, women’s game against Southeastern Conference foe Mississippi. Both games will be played in historic Reynolds Coliseum.
