Swimming & Diving Opens Season on Saturday
10/9/2008 12:00:00 AM | Swimming
RALEIGH, N.C. The NC State men and women’s swimming and diving teams will open the 2008-09 season this Saturday, Oct. 11 against UMBC and Miami at Casey Natatorium at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
Talent is abundant throughout the entire 2008-09 men’s swimming and diving roster. Not only did three members of the team (Dan Forsythe, Mason McGee and Kevin Woodhull-Smith) compete at the U.S. Olympic Trials this past June, but eight student-athletes combine for 18 of the top times in program history. Stephen Mellor, who was named All-ACC last season in both the 200 backstroke and 200 IM, owns three school records alone. In all, eight juniors, seven sophomores, seven freshmen, five seniors and one redshirt-senior comprise the Wolfpack roster.
An experienced core of veterans coupled with a talented mix of incoming freshmen has the women’s swimming and diving program headed in the right direction during the 2008-09 campaign. With 11 juniors, eight freshmen, five seniors and five sophomores, each student-athlete will be called upon to compete throughout the year. Jessica Ward (200 breaststroke) and Jennifer Kopenitz (400 IM) both set new school records last year, while Ward also competed at the Canadian Olympic Trails. Kristin Davies also picked up honorable mention All-America status with a 13th-place finish in the platform dive at the NCAA Championships after setting the school record earlier in the year.
Following Saturday’s action, the men and women’s swimming and diving teams will return to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 25 against West Virginia and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. Action is slated to kickoff at 1 p.m.
