Diving Highlights First Half of Dual Meet

RALEIGH, N.C. Alex Dambly and Kristin Davies both set new personal bests, and Austin Hampton joined them in hitting NCAA diving zones standards as the NC State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams took to the pool in the first half of a dual meet against Duke and Maryland on Friday, Oct. 31.
The men finished the evening leading both the Blue Devils (119-67) and Terrapins (108-77), while the women trail both Duke (123-63) and Maryland (98-87).
Dual meet action will continue tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 1, in Durham at 1 p.m. At the conclusion of Saturday’s meet, the totals of both Friday and Saturday’s competitions will be added together to determine wins and losses.
Dambly hit a personal best 357.95, while Hampton added a 352.50, to take first and second in the 1-meter dive. Both scores surpass qualification marks for the NCAA diving zones. Scott Blackwelder’s 264.95 was good for fifth.
Steven Wright, Travis Martinez, Andrew Fink and Conor Brennan grabbed second in the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:25.45, while Mason McGee (1:40.47) and Andrew Lester (1:41.16) took first and second in the 200 freestyle. Stephen Mellor followed by winning the 100 backstroke on a 50.58, as Dan Forsythe (57.90) and Greg Baskwell (59.48) placed second and fourth respectively in the 100 breaststroke.
Mike Seiferth (1:52.50) and McGee (1:53.37) took second and third in the 200 butterfly, while Brennan wound up second in the 50 freestyle on a 21.40. Mellor (1:52.58), Kevin Woodhull-Smith (1:54.04) and Taylor Goodwin (1:55.40) finished first, second and fourth in the 200 IM, before Lester blew away the field in winning the 1000 freestyle with a 9:27.84
Mellor, Forsythe, Goodwin and Gaites Brown ended the evening by posting a 3:26.05 and taking third in the 400-medley relay.
On the women’s end, Davies set a new personal best and hit an NCAA diving zone standard by posting a 274.85 for fourth-place in the 1-meter dive. Chelsea Ale’s 241.35 landed her sixth.
Ashley Richter, Erica Waters, Erica Smith and Patrice Dason finished third in the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:37.05, while Lucy Lindsey (1:54.18) and Brianna Grover (1:54.58) landed third and fourth in the 200 freestyle. Smith’s 58.17 was good for third in the 100 backstroke, as Anna Linkenauger barely missed first place with a 1:05.56 in the 100 breaststroke.
Richter (24.19) and Dason (24.56) polled third and fifth in the 50 freestyle, before Linkenauger won the 200 IM with a 2:06.22. She followed that with a third-place showing in the 1000 freestyle by clocking in at 10:15.18, while Duke’s Ashley Twichell set a new Casey Natatorium record with a 9:55.36.
