Swim & Dive to Take On Duke, Maryland All Weekend

RALEIGH, N.C. The NC State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will take on Duke and Maryland this weekend in a dual meet that will begin at Casey Natatorium on Friday, Oct. 31, and finish at Duke on Saturday, Nov. 1. Action begins at 6 p.m. on Friday and admission is free. The meet stands as the Pack’s last home contest during the 2008 calendar year.
Saturday’s action in Durham will start at 1 p.m. At the conclusion of Saturday’s dual meet, the totals of both Friday and Saturday’s competitions will be added together to determine wins and losses.
The NC State men stand at 2-1 (0-1 ACC) after splitting a dual meet last weekend in Blacksburg, Va., against West Virginia and Virginia Tech. Six Wolfpack swimmers and divers account for 12 of the league’s top-10 times across eight different events. Stephen Mellor holds three top-10 times, including the league’s best mark in the 200 IM (1:51.86), second in the 200 backstroke (1:48.52) and sixth in the 100 backstroke (50.43). Andrew Lester has the ACC’s sixth-best time in both the 500- (4:33.63) and 1000 freestyle (9:29.04), while Kevin Woodhull-Smith is sixth in the 200 IM (1:54.58) and ninth in the 200 backstroke (1:53.09). Mason McGee is 10th in the 200 freestyle on a 1:40.51.
In diving action, Austin Hampton has the fourth-best showing in the 3-meter (362.45) and seventh-best (314.90) in the 1-meter, while Alex Dambly is ninth in the 3-meter (326.00) and 10th in the 1-meter (304.95). Both divers have already qualified for NCAA diving zones.
Both Duke and Maryland’s teams enter the competition with 1-0 overall records. The Blue Devils previously topped UNC Wilmington (165-135), while the Terrapins defeated Johns Hopkins (185-95).
On the women’s end the Pack stands at 3-1 (1-1 ACC), also splitting last weekend’s meeting against West Virginia and Virginia Tech. Last weekend in Blacksburg Kristin Davies broke the Hokies’ War Memorial Pool record with a 306.15 score in the 3-meter dive, setting a new personal best and qualifying for the NCAA diving zones in the process.
Aside from Davies, Jessica Ward posts the ACC’s ninth-fastest time in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:20.95, while Anna Linkenauger stands 10th in the 200 IM on a 2:06.41.
Duke carries a 3-0 (1-0 ACC) slate, having also topped Miami (129-104) in conference action. Maryland is 1-0 after besting Johns Hopkins (185-95).
