Swimming & Diving Splits with WVU, VT

BLACKSBURG, Va. NC State's men and women's swimming and diving teams split decisions in a dual meet against West Virginia and Virginia Tech on Saturday, Oct. 25. Both programs topped the Mountaineers, while both fell to the Hokies.
The men move to 2-1 (0-1 ACC) after toppling WVU 188.50-123.50 and falling short of VT 183-126. The women now stand at 3-1 (1-1 ACC), defeating West Virginia 187-118, and losing to Virginia Tech 202-107.
Stephen Mellor, Dan Forsythe, Mike Seiferth and Conor Brennan got the afternoon started with a fourth-place showing in the 200 medley relay (1:34.30), which Jimmy Ross followed by placing fourth in the mixed 1000 freestyle (10:11.82). Andrew Lester then grabbed the men's first victory with a 9:29.04 in the 1000 freestyle, before Mason McGee (1:40.51) and Lester (1:40.61) took first and second in the 200 freestyle.
Mellor (50.43) clocked in second in the 100 backstroke, while Forsythe settled for third in the 100 breaststroke (58.45). Kevin Woodhull-Smith took fifth in the 200 butterfly with a 1:53.80, as Brennan finished fourth in the 50 freestyle on a 21.33. Gaites Brown (47.55) and Andrew Keenan (47.89) placed fourth and fifth in the 100 freestyle, before Mellor (1:48.52) won and Woodhull-Smith (1:53.09) took fourth in the 200 backstroke.
Forsythe's 2:09.99 was good for fifth in the 200 breaststroke, before Lester (4:33.64), McGee (4:37.76) and Nick Brittis (4:54.14) finished first, second and fourth in the 500 freestyle. Brown (52.82) and Seiferth (53.08) then placed third and fourth in the 100 butterfly.
Mellor (1:53.53) and Woodhull-Smith (1:55.48) clocked in second and third in the 200 IM, just before Keenan, McGee, Lester and Brown placed third in the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:08.68.
Austin Hampton (334.55), Alex Dambly (309.15) and Scott Blackwelder (242.60) took second, fourth and sixth respectively in the 3-meter dive. The collective results were slightly better in the 1-meter dive as Hampton (312.50) and Dambly (291.70) took second and third while Blackwelder (228.25) landed seventh.
On the women's side, Erica Smith, Jess Ward, Patrice Dason and Ashley Richter took third in the 200 medley relay with a 1:48.03, and Anna Linkenauger (10:20.76) and Maggie McEnerney (10:45.45) took fourth and sixth respectively in the 1000 freestyle. Brianna Grover then finished fifth in the 200 freestyle on a 1:56.18, while Smith took third in the 100 backstroke with a 57.74 and Ward placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:07.06.
Smith's time in 100 backstroke ties the seventh-best time in school history, established in 1997 by Jessica Kelly.
Linkenauger (2:07.42) and Maresa Like-Mathews (2:08.87) placed third and fourth respectively in the 200 butterfly, while Richter (24.41) and Dason (24.69) wound up fourth and sixth in the 50 freestyle. In the 200 backstroke Jen Kopenitz placed fourth with a 2:07.09, while Smith took fifth on a 2:07.26.
In diving, Kristin Davies (247.20) and Chelsea Ale (246.10) landed fourth and fifth in the 1-meter. Davies later won the 3-meter with a new personal-best 306.15, while Ale took third on a 270.60 score. Aside from the personal accomplishment, Davies 306.15 also established a new facility record in the 3-meter dive at Virginia Tech's War Memorial Pool.
Ward and Linkenauger grabbed State's two first-place finishes, with Ward taking the 200 breaststroke with a 2:21.50, while Linkenauger claimed the 500 freestyle on a 5:02.90. Taryn Shelley and McEnerney were also solid in the 500 freestyle, placing third and fourth with a 5:15.40 and a 5:15.53.
Dason (58.05) and Meg Thompson (58.66) took the top two positions in the 100 butterfly, while Alli Hagan (59.01) finished fourth. Like-Mathews (2:11.43) and Kopenitz (2:11.78) placed fifth and sixth in the 200 IM, before Dason, Grover, Richter and Lindsey ended the evening with a third-place showing in the 400 freestyle relay on a 3:34.77 time.
