Welte Advances to Round of 16 at ITA Regional

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior Christian Welte advanced to the round of 16 at the Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional Championship on Saturday, Oct. 17, in Chapel Hill, N.C. Welte defeated Jorday Dyke of VCU, 6-0, 6-0, and then Sanahm Singh of UVA, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, to advance. Welte and senior Jay Weinacker teamed up to advance to the quarterfinals of doubles competition after defeating Charles Bottoni and Grega Teraz (ETSU), 8-6.

Weinacker also competed in singles play, but fell to Patrick Daciek of Virginia Tech, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Freshman Jaime Pulgar lost to Houston Barrick (Virginia), 6-3, 7-6(6), 6-4, and senior Derek Stephens was defeated by Ivan Salec of Radford, 6-2, 6-3.

Pulgar and Stephens teamed up to take on Steve Forman and Cory Parr of Wake Forest, but lost 8-3, in the round of 16.

Play will continue through Oct. 20.
