KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Senior Lauren Doughtie tied a program record with a four-under-par 68 on Friday morning to lead NC State into third place after the first round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships at Fox Run Golf Course.
The Wolfpack shot a season-best team score of +2 (290) and trails only host Tennessee (283) and North Carolina (291).
Doughtie, who holds nearly every record at NC State, tied Briana Vega, former teammate Stephanie Derrey and current teammate Julie Saleeby for the lowest ever 18-hole score by a Wolfpack golfer.
She is also tied with UNC’s Sydney Crane and UCF’s Marika Lendl for the top spot among the field of 98 competitors through the first of three days of competition in Knoxville.
The Suffolk, Va., native birdied No. 1 to get her round going in the right direction. After a bogey at the seventh hole, another birdie at No. 9 left her one-under at the turn. She then had the only eagle of the day at the par-5 10th and then birdied No 11 to get to four-under.
Doughtie gave a shot back at No. 15, but birdied the home hole to best her best collegiate round by one shot, set twice during her junior campaign.
Julie Saleeby and Emily Street each fired even-par rounds of 72 to help the Wolfpack’s cause. Saleeby birdied Nos. 4 and 5 to get to two-under on her round. Bogeys at Nos. 9 and 12 got her back to even par and she posted par the rest of the way for a very steady round.
Street enjoyed similar success today as Saleeby with two birdies and two bogeys. The Forest City, N.C., native had nine straight pars until a birdie at No. 18 left her at even par for the round.
Freshman Meghan Chapman shot a six-over 78 on Friday to tie for 64th. She had four bogeys through the first 17 holes, when she doubled No. 18 to finish her round on a down note.
Joanna Saleeby finished with a seven-over 79 and is tied for 72nd. She had the most up-and-down round of the five NC State golfers today. The front nine featured a triple bogey, two double bogeys and one birdie for up strong.
Second round action begins Saturday morning at 9 a.m. The Wolfpack begins its round at 10:39 a.m., from No. 1 tee.
