The win extends the NC State (4-1-2) unbeaten streak to five matches, while Elon (2-4-1) lost its third straight game to an ACC opponent.
Katie Ruiz set up the winning play off a corner kick, which led to Jessica O'Rourke heading the set piece off an Elon defender into the back of the net for the equalizer at the 91:27 mark.
NC State sophomore keeper Sydney Little earned her second shutout of the year by making three saves in 91:27 of work between the pipes.
The Wolfpack peppered the Elon net for 21 shots, forcing Phoenix net minder Lizz Johnson to make seven saves in the match.
O’Rourke hit the crossbar earlier in the match in the 31st minute that would have put the visitors on top in the first half. The Pack dominated the opening half by continually penetrating the Elon half of the field and out shooting the home team by a 10-1 margin in the first 45 minutes of the match.
The second half was more of the same as the Pack’s offense had the Phoenix on its heels for the majority of play. The Pack mustered 11 more shots in the second half, including multiple quality scoring opportunities that forced Johnson into making five stellar saves.
O’Rourke nearly ended the game in the final minute of regulation. Ruiz again began the possession with a corner kick and seconds later O’Rourke’s shot would ultimately go wide, which sent the Pack into its third overtime match of the season.
Lindsay Vera had four shots during the match, while Kara Baldy and Chantalle Dugas each fired three shots for the Wolfpack.
NC State hosts Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday at Method Road at 2 pm.
