Fernando Sanchez has been named NC State’s new assistant coach for women’s tennis as announced by head coach Hans Olsen. Sanchez replaces Mait DuBois, who was hired as the Head Men’s Tennis Coach at UNC-Wilmington. He comes to NC State after spending the past year at the University of Washington where he helped the team attain a top-75 national ranking. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University where he graduated with a degree is biomedical engineering and was a three-year letterwinner.
“We are very pleased to have Fernando Sanchez join our staff,” Olsen said. “He not only brings a wealth of knowledge as a coach, but his experiences as a player will prove to be just as valuable as he helps our team maintain their national reputation.”
As a player at VCU he helped lead his team to the NCAA Championship Finals in 2000 on his way to earning Rookie of the Year honors. He also helped his team earn three consecutive Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships and was ranked as high as No. 64.
As an assistant coach for the men and women’s tennis teams at VCU, he coached both teams to conference championships in 2003. The women’s team was ranked as high as No. 8 that year while the men’s program was ranked as high as No. 18. He recently graduated from the USTA High Performance Coaching Program.
