Ted Hautau has been named NC State’s new diving coach as announced by head coach Brooks Teal after spending the last 13 years as the diving coach at Davidson College. Hautau coached the ACC Diving Champions in 1992 and 1994 and the ACC Diver of the Year while coaching at North Carolina. He brings a wealth of collegiate and national coaching experience to the Wolfpack staff and will inherit returning All-ACC diver Austin Hampton and a talented diving core on the men’s and women’s team.
“Ted Hautau is an exciting addition to our staff,” Teal said. “He will provide our divers with exceptional leadership and a high level of coaching expertise. His strong national reputation as an outstanding coach and his high energy style will make him a great recruiter. I am confidant that Ted’s drive and vision will not only make a big impact on our diving program, but also help our staff lead Wolfpack swimming and diving to new levels of success.”
Hautau was team captain and a state finalist for three years at South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, N.C., before going on to study speech communications and public relations at the University of North Carolina. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Tar Heels and a member of two consecutive ACC championship teams. Hautau was also a frequent finalist in ACC competition on both boards in 1988.
At Davidson during the 2002-03 season, Hautau coached Chris Wrobleski to a school record in the three-meter dive, scoring 300.75. Wrobleski also broke the one-meter record with a 279.25-point performance during a dual meet with nationally-ranked South Carolina and UNCW. Under Hautau’s guidance, Liz Nugent 02, qualified for the Zone B Championships for two straight seasons and won the three-meter Southern States Champioships in 1999-2000, setting both a meet and school record.
In 1992, Hautau became the men’s and women’s head diving coach at UNC. During his three-year tenure, the women’s team won three ACC championships, while the men claimed two. Hautau has also coached an NCAA Division I All-America diver, two ACC champions, two ACC Diver-of-the-Year recipients and three high school state champions.
In addition to his duties at Davidson, Hautau coaches for Fuel Diving, a local club diving program in Huntersville. He also served as the event coordinator for the 2004 World Cup Trials and 2005 Speedo Jr. National and U.S. Championships in Huntersville, which drew some of the nation’s top divers and Olympians.
