Track Has Five Qualify for NCAA Championships

Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State track and field team will be sending a total of five athletes to the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships being held June 6-9 at the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, California. For the men's side, Dexter Adams will compete in the long jump, Mitchell Pope will be in the shot put, Wesley Smith will run in the 5,000 meters, and Tibor Vegh will be in the steeplechase. For the women's team, Julia Lucas will compete in the 5,000 meters.
Dexter Adams - Adams qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time, as he will compete in the long jump. Adams finished second at the NCAA Regional Championships to advance to the NCAA Championships. He won the ACC Championships this season with a season-best leap of 25'03.50", the first NC State athlete to win in the jumps since 1998. Adams has posted the 17th-best mark nationally this season. The qualifying round of the long jump will be Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. pacific time, while the finals will be held on Thursday at 5:45 p.m.
Julia Lucas - Lucas will be at the NCAA Championships in the outdoor 5,000 meters for the third straight season, as she placed eighth at the 2005 NCAA Championships and was 14th last year. Last time out, she was second in that same event at the NCAA East Regionals. During the indoor season this year, Lucas earned All-American honors in the 5,000 meters with her sixth place finish. She currently has the 15th-best time in the NCAA this season. Lucas will run in the semifinals on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. pacific time, and the finals will be on Friday at 8:10 p.m.
  Mitchell Pope - Pope will be making his second straight trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, competing in the shot put. Last year Pope brought home a 10th place finish. He has had a dominating season thus far, earning a NCAA Regional mark in every meet this season, and finishing second at the NCAA East Regionals. He also won the ACC Championship, and his top throw of 65'05" this season broke a 30-year old school record. During the indoor season this year, Pope earned All-American honors with his seventh place finish at the NCAA Championships in the shot put. He currently had the third-best throw in the NCAA this season. Pope will compete in the qualifying round on Thursday at 4:45 p.m. pacific time, and the finals will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
Wesley Smith - Smith will be competing in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Championships for the season time in his career, as he finished 19th in 2005. Smith currently boasts the 20th-bets time this season, running a 13:51.01 at Stanford earlier this season. The semifinals of the men's 5,000 meters will be run on Wednesday at 8:50 p.m. pacific time, with the finals being held on Friday at 7:45 p.m.
Tibor Vegh - Vegh will also be making his first trip to the NCAA Championships, as he qualified for the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Vegh qualified for the NCAA Championships with a fifth place finish at the NCAA Regionals with a season-best time of 8:49.10, and he also finished fourth at the ACC Championships. He currently has the 29th best time in the NCAA this season. Vegh will run in the semifinals on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. pacific time, and the finals will be held on Friday at 7:25 p.m.
