Lauren Doughtie Places Fifth at Eastern Golf Amateur

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. Lauren Doughtie, a rising junior on the NC State women's golf team, shot a final round 76 to finish tied for fourth at the 2007 Women’s Eastern Golf Association Amateur Championship at the Independence Golf Club.
Among the 80 competing golfers, Doughtie shared the lead after the first two days of competition but fell back after firing a four-over 76 on the last of the three-day, 54-hole tournament. Doughtie finished the championship at +2 (70-72-76=218).
NC State rising sophomores Kristen Vincent and Kathleen Strandberg also competed in the championship. Vincent placed in a tie for 22nd at +11 (77-72-78=227), while Strandberg finished in a tie for 39th at +16 (78-75-79=232).
The championship is open to female amateur golfers, with a certified handicap index of 11.5 or less and who belong to a WEGA Member Club (or have school affiliation). Clubs and schools in Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, and the District of Columbia are eligible to join the Association.
The Women's Eastern Golf Association Amateur Championship is one of the oldest and most prestigious women's amateur championships in the United States dating back to 1906. It is one of the few major women's amateur championships that is played in stroke-play format. The United States Golf Association takes into account a player's performance in the WEGA Amateur Championship when making its selection for The Curtis Cup team. The Curtis Cup is the biennial amateur competition between Great Britain and the United States.
The championship continues through Thursday, June 14.
