RALEIGH, N.C. - Currently ranked No. 13 nationally in doubles, junior Nick Cavaday and senior William Noblitt of the No. 27 NC State men's tennis team have received an at-large bid to the doubles portion of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships. Competition will held in Athens, Ga., May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The Wolfpack pair is one of seven ACC doubles teams to compete on the grand stage.
"This is a great achievement for these two gifted players," said head coach Jon Choboy. "The team has had a good year, but it's great for these two to be able to continue to compete together on the national stage against the best competition in the country.
"I'm really happy for William Noblitt to have the opportunity to play on this level during his senior year," said Choboy. "Nick Cavaday has been a top contributor for us since he got here, and it's very satisfying to see him rewarded for all of the hard work that he has put in."
So far this season Cavaday and Noblitt stand at 11-5 in doubles, with all matches being played at the No. 1 spot. The duo posted an impressive 4-4 slate in conference play.
Noblitt was recently named All-ACC for the second-straight season, becoming the first Wolfpacker to grab league distinction in back-to-back years since Eric Jackson (2000-01). Noblitt also has more wins that any player in program history in both singles and doubles play.
Cavaday, currently ranked No. 92 nationally in singles, picked up All-ACC honors in doubles this season in part for his work alongside Noblitt.
"I think that Noblitt and Cavaday will play hard and represent us very well in the doubles portion of the tournament, as well as helping us out in the team draw in both doubles and singles," said Choboy.
This past Monday the Wolfpack team collected its second-consecutive NCAA Tournament bid. State will face No. 43 William & Mary on Friday, May 11, in Chapel Hill, N.C., on the North Carolina campus. The Pack will enter the match with a 20-9 record, while the Tribe stands at 16-11. The winner of that contest will face the winner of No. 6 North Carolina and Radford on Saturday, May 12, at 4 p.m. in Chapel Hill, with a spot to the Sweet 16 in Athens on the line.
The NCAA team bid marks just the fourth in school history, and the first time that the program has gone to the tournament in back-to-back seasons. It also stands as the first time that the team has ever been a No. 2 seed in its portion of the opening round.
