Navas Gets 500th Win as Softball Downs PSU, 1-0

COLUMBIA, S.C. Abbie Sims tossed a one-hit gem and Kristine Bechtholdt knocked a clutch RBI single to help NC State eliminate Penn State from the NCAA Tournament, 1-0, on Saturday, May 19. Sims (27-7) walked just two batters en route to the win, while Jenn Reynolds (13-11) took the loss. With the victory, NC State stays alive at 42-20 on the season, while the Nittany Lions year comes to a close at 26-25. The win marks the 500th victory for Lisa Navas as a head coach.
State loaded the bases in the top of the third, but failed to score. Krystal Hawkins singled up the middle and stole second, and Jen Chamberlin and Miranda Ervin drew back-to-back two-out walks to load the bases. But Shanna Smith sent a grounder to second, and Ervin was forced out to end the inning.
Penn State got its first base runners of the game when Sims walked Shana Madura and Jen Acunto in the bottom of the third, but it didn’t matter as the Pack defense clamped down and kept the Nittany Lions from doing any damage.
NC State grabbed the only run of the game in the top of the fourth, staging a permanent 1-0 lead. Sims walked and Beth Poore took her place at first with one out. Megan Dalthorp then sent a grounder to third that pushed Poore to second, and Bechtholdt followed with an RBI single into right.
The Pack dodged a major bullet in the bottom of the sixth, as the Nittany Lions loaded the bases with one out and failed to score. Acunto broke up Sims’ no-hitter with a base hit to right, and Meghan Wolfer followed with a grounder back to the circle that Sims bobbled. Ashley Esparza then took a pitch to the body to load the bases. But Danielle Kinley popped up to short, and Kayce Zielinski followed with a pop-up back to Sims, and State got out of the inning.
Chamberlin extended her hitting streak to 10-straight games with a two-out single up the middle in the top of the seventh.
NC State will take on South Carolina in a second elimination game later tonight at 7 p.m.
